Why I Am Running

Dear Friends,

I want to thank you for taking the time to visit my site. As you browse through the site, I hope you’ll take the time to sign up for our campaign newsletter.

I’m running for Congress because we need representation in Washington that will work on restoring the American Dream for every Iowan. Recent polls have shown that 80% of Americans do not believe their children will be better off than their parents. One of the things that has separated our great country from the rest of the world is our citizens have always had hope and belief for a better tomorrow – belief that our children will live better than us. Every generation in this country has lived better than the previous – I am fighting to keep that dream alive.

Einstein’s definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over yet expecting different results. We have enough lawyers in Washington - we need to send representatives to Washington who have real world business experience – who are not going to play by the establishment rules.

Washington DC believes in the power of government. They believe they can spend your money wiser than you, who earned it. America isn’t great because of government; America is great because of its citizens. I believe in the power of each and every individual person. Government isn’t the solution – we the people are the solution.

Washington DC believes government should pick the winners and the losers. From bank bailouts to corporate bailouts to Cash for Clunkers – Washington thinks they know what’s best for us. I believe corporations should rise or fail without taxpayer money. Individuals should succeed or fail based upon their own merits. I don’t believe in bailouts, I don’t believe in corporate welfare and I don’t believe in “too big to fail”.

Washington DC is saddling our children and grandchildren with mountains of debt. Over the last three years, Washington has racked up $4 trillion in deficits. Our national debt stands at $15 trillion. Our GDP this year will be $15 trillion so our debt equals 100% our GDP. That’s not good. Leading economists agree that as a country’s debt grows its economic growth rates shrink. I believe in fiscal common sense.

Revenues to the government have grown by 24% since 2001, the last time we had a balanced budget. But expenditures have skyrocketed by 81%. We don’t have a revenue problem – we have a spending addiction. We need to send people to Washington who believe NO is an acceptable answer sometimes.

Many in Washington believe that abortion is a woman’s right and a woman’s choice. I believe in the sanctity of life from conception to cradle to the grave. I believe that human life has a natural right to be protected – consistent with the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

Though America is struggling right now, I am optimistic about our future because I am witnessing an increasing number of citizens in this country who are willing to stand up to Washington DC.

For example, the phenomenon of the Tea Party movement is the greatest example of grassroots citizenship I have seen in this country in my lifetime.

Going forward our collective challenge is to replace our increasingly government-centered country with a government based on those principles that made America a gift to the world.

I’m looking forward to the challenge – I sincerely hope you’ll join with me!
